Heroic Rescue

We had a "fun adventure" at play group last week. Raegan was snooping in our friend's bathroom and got trapped. She pulled out a drawer to look in and it wouldn't close. It was right by the bathroom door, so the door could open only about an inch. She said, "Hey, mommy! Come over here," but then kept closing the door on me. I thought she was messing with me, so I was firm in asking her to open the door. I figured she was up to something if she didn't want me to come in. Once I realized it was stuck, I got hot all over and wanted to kick the door in. I think the hardest part was being at someone else's house and having more regard for their things than I would my own in that situation. We tried reaching through with a butter knife to lift up on the drawer and have her push, but it didn't work. Not much was in our favor: the door hinges were on the inside and the knob's screws were also on the inside. I went outside to the window above the shower, but it wasn't functional. It would have to be broken. She didn't understand why I was talking to her through the window instead of getting her out. I showed her how to push on the drawer, and it budged a little. After that, she got frazzled and couldn't do anything I was asking her to do. We tried a few more things then called the fire department. I stood on a chair at the window to keep her company while the firefighters broke the door handle off. By that point she was crying "I want to hold you!" I felt so bad that she seemed to think I was leaving her in there. They reached through the door knob hole and closed the drawer. I ran inside to get her and a firefighter was holding her. For her sake I'm glad none of them had a mustache. She calmed down after a few minutes and has been asking to hear the story every day. "You wanna tell me about how those firefighters got me out?" That night at bedtime, she called the firefighters on her phone to tell them "thanks" and ask if they could come over to fix her lamp.

Here she is reenacting the scene. She made Ryan go in the bathroom and pretend to be stuck.
